Placement Exams

Accepted Freshman may need to take placement exams in order to be registered for the correct courses. Contact your advisor for more information on your individual requirements.

Computer Science Placement Exam
Although programming experience is not required of first year students, we realize that many students have had some programming experience and that a basic, introductory programming course may not be the most appropriate placement.

If you did not take the Java-based, AP Computer Science exam but feel that you have ample programming experience, including experience with Java, you are eligible to take a placement exam during New Student Orientation. This placement exam will determine your familiarity with topics covered in the advanced placement course and determine your eligibility to take an accelerated course.

Math Placement Exam
The School of Mathematical Sciences at RIT administers an online Mathematics Placement Exam to all incoming students whose degree program requires a calculus course.

You will receive a mailing with more information about when and how to take this exam.

We strongly encourage that you prepare for this exam and take it seriously. Your score will determine which Calculus track you take, and can effect your eligibility for other courses throughout your first and second year.

Practice exams and more information are available at here.
