Annual Advising Checklist


1st Year

  • Meet with your academic advisor for mandatory registration meetings in Fall & Winter
  • Learn the name of your assigned academic advisor, and know how to schedule an advising appointment
  • Define short and long term goals
  • Understand your degree requirements, outlined on the Flowchart and your academic worksheet


2nd Year

  • Explore Liberal Arts concentrations (or minors) and declare your selection
  • Attend the fall Career Fair to familiarize yourself with how career fairs work
  • Prepare your resume and cover letter. Work with Kara Leonard (kmloce@rit.edu) in the co-op office to jump start your co-op search
  • Attend a co-op orientation and familiarize yourself with Jobzone
  • If courses and credit requirements will be met, begin applying for co-op positions to begin in the summer quarter
  • Assess your strengths and explore the connections between your interests and potential careers
  • Review short and long term goals
  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once during your 2nd year
  • Do a Student Self-Audit to ensure your courses are on track


3rd Year

  • Explore options for Application Domain, and declare your domain by the end of your third year
  • Explore options of minors and/or courses to fill elective requirements in the SE program
  • Continue to refine your resume, and apply for co-op positions
  • Attend the fall and spring Career Fairs
  • Begin to create a professional network. Attend lecture series and professional talks offered across campus
  • Be active in extra-curricular activities related to your academic and professional goals
  • Clarify short and long term goals
  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once during your 3rd year
  • Do a Student Self-Audit to ensure your courses are on track


4th Year

  • Assess whether you are on track to complete pre-requisites for Senior Project before Winter of your fifth year
  • Respond to advisor outreach regarding graduation plans. This puts you in the pipeline for Senior Project
  • Confirm that any minors you are pursuing have been properly declared
  • Confirm that your Application Domain has been properly declared
  • Further refine resume and cover letter and complete co-op requirements
  • Submit your Application for Graduation
  • Evaluate short and long term goals. Revise as necessary
  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once during your 4th year
  • Do a Student Self-Audit to ensure your courses are on track


5th Year

  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once during your 5th year
  • Do a Student Self-Audit to ensure your courses are on track
  • Watch for emails about Senior Project, and submit preferences for teams and project assignment promptly
  • Attend the Graduation Fair in February
  • Discuss future plans (employment, graduate school, etc.) with your advisor and identify any steps remaining to help realize your goals
  • Verify that you address is correct on SIS – so that your diploma reaches you!
