Free elective courses in the BS in Software Engineering program provide a number of opportunities for a student to explore subjects of interest beyond the areas covered by required courses in the program. The exploration of other subjects is a main intent for selection of courses.
Free Electives are typically completed as a combination of 3-credit courses. Students may also combine credits from 1-, 2- or 4-credit courses to reach the total credits required for their curriculum:
- ‘Old Curriculum’ (enrolled prior to Fall 2016): Complete 6 credits Free Elective
- ‘New Curriculum’ (enrolled Fall 2016 and later): Complete 9 credits Free Elective
The following restrictions ensure that the free elective courses that a student chooses will provide that intended educational benefit. Free elective credits will not be awarded for:
- Remedial/bridge coursework taken subsequent to related core coursework (e.g., Pre-calculus after taking Calculus).
- A course that covers similar material, or material at a lower level, to another required or elective course (e.g., College Physics and University Physics, introductory programming class and Computer Science I).
It is the student's responsibility to verify that a course is valid as a free elective. If you have any questions about a particular course, check with your advisor.
