Prospective Students

Every year our department participates in a number of Institute-wide activities designed to help you decide which field of study is right for you. You can find the schedule of these activities at Admissions Activities. Attending an open house is an effective way to learn about Software Engineering and the wide variety of programs RIT offers.

To be considered for admission to Software Engineering you must have a high school diploma and demonstrated ability to do college level work. Admission decisions are based on high school courses and grades, as well as standardized tests such as the SAT.

You may also be considered for admission if you have completed an associates degree in a related discipline. If you are considering this option you should carefully plan your course work so as to maximize your transfer credits. In particular, if you wish to transfer to Software Engineering, you should try to satisfy the calculus, and science requirements while at a two-year institution. If there are any questions as to the transferability of specific courses, please contact the department's senior student advisor.

If you are a prospective student who has taken college courses, but either has not completed a degree program, or has a degree in an unrelated field, we will evaluate your individual case. Only courses with a grade of "C" or better can be accepted for transfer, up to a maximum of 99 quarters hours of credit.
