Starting college and planning your degree program can be a bit overwhelming. Here are answers to common questions.
- How do I arrange to see an academic advisor?
There are daily walk-in and appointment hours and they are posted outside the Software Engineering office. To schedule an appointment to see your academic advisor, call (475-5461) or stop by the Software Engineering Student Services Office (70-1690).
- Is there a descriptive list of liberal arts minors and concentrations online?
- Can I minor in Math?
Yes, RIT offers minors in both Mathematics and Statistics.
- Does RIT have a minor in Physics?
Yes, RIT does offer a minor in both Physics and Astronomy.
- I repeated a course, but both grades are used to calculate my GPA. Why?
Both grades will be used to calculate your GPA until you fill out and submit a "Request for Repeat of Grade" form. Once the form has been submitted, both grades will appear on your transcript, but only the last grade will be used to calculate your GPA. The "Request for Repeat of Grade" form is available in the bins on the wall outside of the Software Engineering Student Services Office (70-1690)
- What is considered full time?
A student taking 12 credit hours or a student on co-op is considered full time.
- I'm currently taking Computer Science 1 and Calculus 1. What do I take next?
Both Computer Science and Calculus are sequenced courses, which means that there are follow-up courses to each. As a Software Engineering major, you are required to take Computer Science 1-4 and Calculus 1-3. Follow the sequence taking one course from Computer Science and Calculus each quarter until they are complete.
- What should I do if I have to miss a class?
Talk to your instructor about your absence ahead of time to find out about any academic consequences. You should also make arrangements to acquire the information or assignments you will miss. If you miss class due to an emergency, contact your instructor as soon as possible so that the instructor can help you catch up. Do not ask, "Did I miss anything?" Most instructors are personally and professionally attached to the topics they teach, so everything they cover in class is important. If you missed class, you missed something.
- What are the Wellness/Physical Education requirements?
All students must take either First Year Enrichment (FYE) or Wellness for Life (WFL) and that course counts as your required wellness course. **All first year students are automatically enrolled in FYE for Fall and Winter quarters and expected to complete this course sequence.** Students must also successfully complete two DIFFERENT wellness activity courses (tennis, rock climbing, skiing, etc.).
- I don't think that Software Engineering is for me, what should I do if I am considering changing my major?
The first thing that you should do is meet with your Academic Advisor. Your advisor will discuss options with you, refer you to different departments to learn more about them and initiate the "Change of Program" paperwork that needs to be completed. In the Software Engineering Department, YOU MUST meet with an academic advisor before a "Change of Program" form is sent to another department.
