Welcome to Software Engineering

Dear Incoming Students to the Software Engineering Department:

I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to RIT and the Department of Software Engineering (SE) in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS).  You are joining an exciting and demanding college that will provide an education to help you meet the expectations and opportunities you will encounter in your career and throughout your life. It is our hope that your academic career at RIT will prove to be fruitful and challenging.

To start your career at RIT off on the right foot we encourage you to visit the RIT New Student Orientation website for further information about our program.  Their website and materials contain a checklist of to-do items and information about the many services and resources that will help you make the most of your experience at RIT. You will also find details about the DiscoveRIT Pre-Orientation Program. Freshman will move into the residence halls on Tuesday, August 21 and New Student Orientation will run through August 26, 2018. You can find more information at www.rit.edu/orientation.

Please fill out our questionnaire by Friday, June 15th so we can get to know a little more about you. Your academic adviser will use this information in order to plan your fall semester schedule. In order to fill out the questionnaire you will need to know information about your AP courses and previous college credit you have been awarded. All freshmen will be pre-registered for fall term courses in late-July. Incoming SE students are required to take the Math Placement Exam (MPE). The MPE is available from May 15-June 30. To access the exam or for more information, please feel free to visit: https://www.rit.edu/science/mpe. In addition, this summer you will have the opportunity to prepare yourself for your introductory programming class via an optional, free, on-line class experience called Code Zero. More information will be forthcoming. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

You are beginning your college work in one of the largest software engineering programs in the United States. If you have visited the department and talked to our students, I hope you have gained the sense of community within SE that is fostered by the staff, faculty, and particularly the students. Become part of that community. Talk to seniors about their project work. Drop into the Society of Software Engineers Mentoring Lab to socialize, study, work on projects, or help mentor students. There is a lot going on that can benefit you, and will benefit from your own contributions.

On Thursday, August 23 you will meet fellow incoming students as well as faculty and staff at your mandatory group academic session where we will review curriculum requirements and answer scheduling questions. Advisers will be available throughout your years at RIT to assist you with career planning and any other advising issues.

You will find that the SE Department will offer you the support, challenges, and rewards you expect in a high quality academic program. If we can assist you as you prepare for college, please contact us via e-mail at advising@se.rit.edu or by phone, at (585) 475- 5461. We trust that your experience at GCCIS and in the SE department will be as fulfilling for you as it is for us. We look forward to meeting you in the fall.
