Secrets of Scrum's Success

Alan Atlas
Certified Scrum Trainer

Scrum is the Agile method of choice in the IT industry worldwide. When implemented with deep understanding and discipline, it can result in unprecedented improvements in software development productivity and quality. Why does the Scrum process framework work so well, what are the important things to be aware of when adopting it, and what are the dangers and weaknesses that should be avoided? This talk will briefly explore the foundations of Scrum from the perspective of Lean Software Development, then move on to visit the major touch points of the methodology and explain how they contribute to improved software development.

Date: Friday, 17 April 2009
Time: 12 noon
Place: Golisano Building Auditorium (70-1400)

Speaker bio: Alan's software development work started in realtime UNIX kernels. This led him into 25 years of technical management up to the Senior VP level before voluntarily downgrading to Development Manager where things are a lot more fun. Highlights of his work include the release of OSF Motif, and AvidNews 1.0, a broadcast news management system from Avid Technology. At Amazon.com, Alan discovered Scrum. His team used Scrum to successfully deliver Amazon S3, the industry-award-winning web service that provides unlimited Internet-connected storage, in 2006. The success of the Amazon S3 project and Alan's enthusiasm for the Scrum methodology led to widespread Scrum adoption within Amazon.com. His experience as the first fulltime Agile Trainer/Coach within Amazon led him to make a career switch into fulltime Agile Coaching and Training at Rally Software, a leader in Agile tools and consulting.
