Week 6 - Professional Responsibility

Class Plan:

1. Introduce SE Code of Ethics and Professional Practice writing exercise (30 minutes)

Activity:

PART I (30 minutes)

• Based on the information you learned from the homework’s reading (SE Code of Ethics and Professional Practice), you are to write two separate scenarios where, in your capacity as a Software Engineer, you might encounter a situation that would be in direct conflict with the Code of Ethics.
• For this exercise you need to be creative. We are not looking for a complete story but a well defined situation (2-3 paragraphs). Perhaps you have already had something happen to you or you have heard from others on a situation that went bad. Describe the situation and potential (or actual) outcomes. For each of the scenarios identify and record the Principle(s) that are/were put in jeopardy. Each scenario needs to cover at least one unique Principle “area” (i.e. JUDGMENT, MANAGEMENT, etc.) not covered in the other one.

* When you have completed your two scenarios, run the spell checker and make sure to submit your individual scenarios in one MSWord or PDF document to mycourses drop box labeled "Activity- Week 6" and also to the Group Locker for this activity.

PART II (30 minutes)

• Teams will be formed and move to the project team rooms where each member will share the scenarios the wrote for PART I.
• After all scenarios have been shared, the team must select “the best ONE”. Making sure that you understand which principle(s) the scenario is related to.
• Using the original description of the scenario complete/augment the story and create a Skit that all participants will act out for the class (approx. 5 minutes).  Make sure you identify the actors and roles, and consider whether your skit depicts a "right" choice, "wrong" choice or something in between. Note: Try not to explicitly call out the Principle during your skit.

PART III (30 minutes)

• Teams are selected in random order to act out their skit.
• At the end of each skit the class will discuss what Principle(s) was/were involved.
