The IBM Academic Initiative provides members with access to IBM software offerings that are to be used for instructional, learning, and non-commercial research purposes.
This software is available to students registered in credit-bearing courses in the RIT Software Engineering Department.
For more information on the IBM Academic Initiative, and to see what software is available, see http://www.ibm.com/university/
(Select "Products & Technologies" in the navigation pane on the left of that page)
Below are ways to access some of the IBM Rational development tools. If there are other IBM products (From IBM, Lotus, Tivoli, or Rational, plus Unix versions of the products) that you are interested in, let Scott Hawker (hawker AT se DOT rit DOT edu) know.
The IBM Rational Suite for Windows XP Professional software is available on all SE Department lab machines. In addition, you can install the software on your own personal computer, one copy per user.
The IBM Rational Suite for Windows, which bundles together the core IBM Rational products, is available for download in the SE department "pub" directory under \\pintsize.se.rit.edu\pub\Rational_Software\ (you must be on campus or connected via VPN). Open up that directory in file explorer or some such and navigate to and download the zip file. In that directory is an HTML file that describes the products in the IBM Rational Suite. That file is accessible here, too.
(Note: The Rational XDE Developer Plus for Java and for .NET are separate from the Rational Suite products. You can download them from the same directory.)
You will need a product license key to actually use the products. To get a key, you will need to obtain host information for your computer (see below), then send an email to Scott Hawker (hawker AT se DOT rit DOT edu) with that host information PLUS the following statement:
I will only use the provided software for instructional, learning, and non-commercial research purposes related to credit-bearing courses in the RIT Software Engineering Department.
(The software on the Software Engineering file server is only for Microsoft Windows XP Professional. If you want software for Linux or Unix, contact Scott Hawker.)
Obtain the installation zip archive from \\pintsize.se.rit.edu\pub\Rational_Software\ (the "pub" or "X:" drive)
The files are large, so you might want to do it from on campus if you have a slow network connection
Unzip the archive to a convenient location
Launch setup.exe in the top-level directory (such as enterprise/DISK1)
Select Rational Suite Enterprise to install
Select Desktop Installation from CD image
You can skip through almost all of the configuration items (click "Next" for ClearQuest, PurifyPlus, ClearCase LT, etc.), but the installer will complain that it needs a server name for the ClearCase LT server. Since we don't have ClearCase set up, just give a server name (I use linus.se.rit.edu) to be able to proceed.
So that you don't have to go through so many blank options, you may be able to just hit the "Done" button, then, where the dialog highlights in the left-hand pane the configuration it needs (ClearCase server), select that item and enter the server name (linus.se.rit.edu should work).
When you are done, the License Wizard may pop up. If so, then

Follow the setup wizard instructions. Let me know if you have questions or problems.
In the same directory as the software are course materials for learning to use the Rational tools (XDE, Rational Unified Process, etc.). Look in \\pintsize.se.rit.edu\pub\Rational_Software\Courses & Tutorials.
