Slack Setup (team)
- create a Slack account using your RIT email address (unless you already have a RIT-associated account)
Any channel creation should be done by one team member. Please, discuss within your team and elect a person to do it.
Create channels
-
within the Slack workspace for your section where you have been invited to by your instructor, create a new private channel and name it using the pattern nl-general where
- n is your team number (e.g., 1)
- l is the corresponding to the number letter (e.g., a)
-
within the Slack workspace for your section where you have been invited to by your instructor, create a new private channel and name it using the pattern nl-standups where
- n is your team number (e.g., 1)
- l is the corresponding to the number letter (e.g., a)
- the result for team 5 should look like this: 5e-general and 5e-standups
- please, follow the pattern strictly, your instructor may have more than a dozen channels to manage
- add the rest of your team members to the channel
- add your instructor and your TA to the channel
Team Contract
- discuss within your team what should be responsibilities of all members (what did you put into the team formation survey?)
- those are typically not technical ("John will be working on backend"), but cross-cutting (e.g., "we will meet twice a week at specific times" or "we will respond to each other messages in a timely manner")
- create a contract with at least 5 terms that all team members agree with
- post the contract in your channel and pin the message
- each team member should "sign" the team contract by making a comment in the contract thread: "I agree to abide by the terms of this team contract"
Virtual Standups
Use the virtual standup channel for daily standups (what did I do yesterday, what will I do today, and any blockers I have) and post notes about your progress and blockers from each meeting.
Integrations (optional)
There is a set of integrations that can be added to Slack to make it more useful. You are not required to use any of them, but you may find some of them convenient. Here are a few examples:
- GitHub integration - allows you to receive notifications into your channel when an event occurs in a GitHub repository (e.g., a new commit is pushed or a pipeline failed)
- Trello integration - allows you to receive notifications into your channel when an event occurs in a Trello board (e.g., a new card is created or a card is moved)
- various meetup tools (e.g., Geekbot, Standuply or just Slackbot) that can be used to facilitate virtual standups and other team meetings within Slack
Submission
Take a screenshot of the contract and signatures and submit it to the assignment submission page on myCourses.
